Day in the Life of the Vineyard - Episode 2, cover crops

We are continuing our new video series documenting important moments in the Vineyard over the course of the 2024 vintage. Doug Shumaker, owner of Shumaker Vineyards in the Tualatin Hills AVA of the Willamette Valley in Oregon will lead your journey to discover what it takes to grow outstanding wine grapes for a boutique winery to produce high-quality, craft wines. Today’s topic is cover crops and how they are important to the health of the vineyard by adding biodiversity and mulch without the need for commercial fertilizer. The cover crop this Spring is an annual rye planted last year, along with some native plants and wildflowers, and of course some “weeds”. The weather was perfect the last few days which allowed us to get the tractor into the vineyard to grind up last year’s pruning and get the first mowing done.
